Make a Splash: Prioritizing Water Safety, From A Mother’s Perspective by Jenny McCuiston

As a mother, I know there’s nothing like hearing the splish-splashes and laughter of our children playing in the water - - whether it’s in the backyard pool, the hotel pool on vacation, or at the local beach with family and friends.

But I also know that with that joy can come a parents’ worst nightmare; one that many don’t consider when going through the prepping for trips and lake days. It’s the scary fact that drowning is THE leading cause of children ages 1-4, and the second leading cause for children ages 5-14.  I’ve had heartbreaking conversations with mothers who’ve lost their children, and I’ve heard it time and time again:  ‘I just didn’t know.”

It’s my mission to help families know. To help them understand the importance of prioritizing water safety, and to give them the tools to keep their little ones safe.

As the founder of Goldfish Swim School, my dedication to water safety stems from a unique blend of experiences— being raised in the Great Lake state always surrounded by water, my background as a competitive swimmer, and my expertise in child development. Long before I became a mother myself, I recognized the critical need for quality swim lessons that prioritized safety and child-centric learning, so that children build a love and a respect for the water while learning life-saving swim skills.

Now as a mom of four boys, I understand more than ever that parental involvement is key to promoting water safety.

My Family’s Water Safety Tips:

  • Start Swim Lessons Early

  • Play By The Rules.

    • When my boys are in play-mode, rules can fall by the wayside. Before a day near the water, we always review the rules together as a family before letting them loose.

  • Bright Swimsuits ONLY.

    • My boys choose their swimsuits based on their favorite colors, characters, or a combination of the two. Play an active role in the selection process, and find the brightest swimsuits possible. Lean towards vibrant shades of orange, pink and yellow to help you see your child at all times.

  • Install Fences & Pool Alarms, and Lock Doors

    • Nearly 70% of drownings among children under 4 happen during non-swim times. It’s quick, and most times, silent. It’s NOT like the movies. Prevent access to the water when swim time is over, and NEVER store toys in or near the pool.

  • No Floaties

    • We never rely on floaties, water wings or puddle jumpers! They tend to give children a false sense of security and confidence, can easily become loose or deflate, and can actually put children in an incorrect (and dangerous!) swimming position. Instead, seek out Coast Guard-Approved life jackets and vests.

  • Assign a Water Guardian

    • Make sure to keep eyes on the kids at all times, even if lifeguards are present. Kids are curious and are willing to push limits without knowing the true hazards. We always designate an adult “Water Guardian” whose sole responsibility is keeping an eye on the swimmers. No chatting, checking phones or distractions. Accidents can happen in SECONDS.

As a mom, I want us all to unite in a goal of no more drownings. Let’s nurture a culture where water safety is talked about, and families understand the importance of vigilance. It’s paramount as we create precious memories with our children, ensuring each swim is a treasured and safe experience!
