Recipe: Healthy Hot Cocoa by Jennah Jensen
Who doesn’t like a sweet treat once in a while? Hot cocoa and chocolate milk are childhood favorites but what parent doesn’t cringe at the amount of refined sugar in those drinks!? I feel you Mama! That’s why I’ve created this healthier version of cocoa. This recipe is sweet and decadent but uses natural sugar from dates along with the antioxidant powerhouse of cacao powder instead of highly processed chocolate that is found in conventional store-bought mixes. This version is not only delicious but it’s actually nutritious too! Now your littles can enjoy this classic childhood treat and you can feel at peace knowing that they’re getting the best of both worlds!
Ingredients:
2 cups plant milk (I’m using Oatley)
2 + 1/2 medjool dates, pitted
2 tablespoons cacao powder
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt
Method:
Make sure that the dates are pitted and cut them into small pieces so that they blend easily.
Next, chuck all ingredients into a high speed blender and blend on high for a few minutes until the dates are completely incorporated and you can no longer hear them blending.
Once blended, transfer to a stovetop on medium heat and warm until desired temperature is reached. Alternatively, you can let it sit in the fridge for an hour or so to create a chocolate milk.
*Serves 2 one cup servings or 4 half cup servings.
