Why Taking Better of Yourself Can Improve Your Breastfeeding Journey by Katherine Williams
As many new moms will tell you, breastfeeding a newborn is not always smooth sailing. In fact, it can be quite the adjustment in the beginning, especially if you're feeling sleep deprived on top of it all. That being said, in order to be the best version of your and keep your sanity, it’s important to implement self-care. This is more than bubble baths and face masks, today we’re sharing small things you can implement to make the journey an easier one by taking better care of yourself first.
Have Supplies On Hand
Nursing a baby is no small feat, and new moms often find themselves ill-prepared for the challenges of breastfeeding. In addition to the obvious necessities like a breast pump and bottles, there are a few other items that can make life much easier for nursing moms. Nursing pads are a must-have for preventing leaks, while a comfortable nursing pillow makes it easier to position the baby without straining your back, and a soft blanket can be used for coverage or burping. Also, don’t underestimate the importance of a quality nursing bra. Look for one that offers plenty of support and coverage, and that can adjust to your changing breast size. No time to go shopping? That’s okay! Toss a few packs of nursing pads, nursing bras and a pillow into your cart for your next big diaper order from your preferred online retailer.
Consuming the right diet is a necessity
As a new nursing mom, it is doubly essential that you eat right to avoid feeling drained of energy during a time that can be particularly demanding. Therefore, it is vital that you consume the right diet so you not only have enough energy for yourself and your newborn but also to ensure that your breastmilk supply and quality is not compromised in any way.
Journal your feelings
Motherhood can be challenging in the beginning as you slowly adjust to this new way of living. And the breastfeeding phase is one of those stages that you really can't be prepared for until you actually experience it. That said, it is one of the most beautiful times in a new mothers life as she bonds with her precious bundle of joy. And what better way to record these special times than by journaling these beautiful memories so that you can capture them for a lifetime? That said, don’t put too much pressure on yourself to create profound entries. Instead, add what feels right in the moment. There’s no wrong way to do it!
Get as much sleep as you need
Sleep is vital no matter what phase of life you're in. However, it is even more crucial in the beginning stages of nursing your newborn where the quantity of sleep you are able to get is at an all-time time low. Therefore, try to get those few restful hours of sleep per night so that you can wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the busy day ahead. We know this is a tall order, so look for ways to add sleep whenever you can. Talk to your partner about taking shifts and reach out to friends and family who can spend time with your baby while you get a few winks.
Take time out for you
If breastfeeding could be described as anything, monotonous is what usually comes to mind - as beautiful as the process is. That's why it is so critical to take time out for yourself so that you don't end up feeling consumed by the responsibilities at hand. So, take that time to enjoy the things that make you feel lighter and happier and you're to feel like a better version of yourself upon your return. Go for a run, read a few chapters in a book, go have lunch with a friend or indulge yourself with that bubble bath and face mask.
Balancing your responsibilities better
It can certainly feel overwhelming in the beginning trying to take on new responsibilities while still juggling the duties and responsibilities you had before becoming a parent. Moreover, you might feel even worse if you worry your other kids feel left out because you don't have as much time for them as you used to. So, in order to prioritize your other children more, it might help to set aside time just for them. This doesn't have to require that much planning in advance in order for the time to be meaningful; it's more about setting aside time in a day and being disciplined about it. You can read them a bedtime story, help them with a bath or plan something exciting to do for just you and them.
The joy of nursing is one of those times that can't be put into words - that's how beautiful and special it is. But it can be dampened if you aren't paying attention to your needs first, which is why you should make every effort to add some self-care in your life. So stock up on all the right necessities to limit the overwhelm, eat healthy foods, journal when you can, try to get plenty of sleep, and take time out for yourself and your other kiddos. You won’t regret it, and you’ll be a better mom when you make yourself a priority.
