In a time when most fear talking about death, what we also fail to do is discuss life.
Most of us go to school, get a job, get married, start a family, maybe think about putting a Will in place, continue to work, get busy with family life and before we know it, we are dreaming of retirement and what we will do with all of our spare time!
How many of you ask yourself, how do I want to be remembered when I pass?
As a believer that we come into this life with a reason and a purpose, it’s undeniable that we each have our unique gifts. But how much do we use them to help others?
How do you live with purpose?
If you’re caught up in the rat race of life then you’re not alone. It’s easy to wake up one day and say, “how did I end up here?” Which is why living with purpose is paramount if you want to leave a lasting legacy.
Ask yourself questions like, why do I do what I do? What lights me up? What am I passionate about? Even, what did I love to do as a child? As often this is an indication as to what your strengths are. For example a child who loved understanding how things work and fixing broken things, makes for a good builder, mechanic or engineer. A child who would play for hours with their dolls and teddies instructing them and solving problems can be the beginnings of a teacher…
Even if you choose to work in a field that you’re not super passionate about, how do you find that passion in your spare time? Do you volunteer for a conservation group or help children in need? Do you grow your own vegetables and share the excess with your community?
There are many ways to uncover and follow your passion and this is a big piece of the puzzle to leaving your legacy. When we are passionate about something it lights us up and those around us can feel and benefit from that too. The famous quote by Maya Angelou is a great reminder, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
What can you do differently in your life from this day forward to consciously create how you want to be remembered when you pass? Are you being the best version of yourself that you can be? Better than who you were yesterday and aspiring to be better again than that tomorrow?
So, whilst you may avoid the topic of your mortality, ensure that you make it your mission to be the person you want to be remembered as. For once you are gone, you will be but a lasting memory, a feeling and hopefully someone that will be talked about and felt often.
