Notes on a Mother’s Intuition by Kate Bloom

First of all, what is this mother’s intuition that we speak of? It’s not so much a magical sign from the universe (although I do believe in those too) it’s more so confidently knowing your baby, that deep shared connection and the ability to pick up on something or make quick decisions without much thought. Once we learn to harness this powerful skill, we will use it every single day, like second nature. They say A mother’s intuition is a small part of the entire spiritual experience of motherhood and I could not agree more.

Until we walk through the portal that is maiden to mother, everything is a little unknown. Life in the fourth trimester is messy, we’re trying to figure it all out. We live in a world of social media, podcasts, books and google – we are absolutely inundated with information, so much so that perhaps we forget to listen to the most knowing, us, our baby’s mother. Breathe, the answers lie within.

The truth is, this intuition is something that cannot be taught, it’s something we must simply trust, lean into and learn to embrace. However, I do have some little tips to help you on your journey.

My personal tips for harnessing your innate mothering wisdom & intuition….

1.     TRUST YOUR BODY.
Thankfully, nature created our bodies, particularly our brains so perfectly. Did you know that pregnancy actually rewires our brain? Our senses become heightened – so we can hear our baby’s cry across a busy room, so we can smell when the milk in the fridge is off or when it’s time to change a nappy. Our body responds emotionally and physically to the needs of our baby too, like when you feel hot and sweaty when your baby is hysterical at the grocery store or when your breasts leak milk as your baby wakes…the list goes on. It’s all connected, we are connected.

2.     THE POWER OF THE GOLDEN MONTH.
For thousands of years, women from all over the world have honoured the sacred month post birth. It’s tradition to have a month or so in confinement, to rest, revitalise, heal and get to know your baby and the new version of yourself, Mother. Unfortunately in our western world of ‘bounce back’ culture, this is not necessarily the norm. But trust me, this precious time creates a solid foundation for your motherhood journey, so book in a cleaner, have your friends drop meals to your door and absolutely bask in the postpartum glory.

3.     PRACTISE.
The more time spent mothering your little cubs, the more in tune you will become.

Embrace your mistakes and learn from them, trust what is right for your family and remember, this baby chose you, you are the perfect mumma for them.
