Sadie Jean's Birth by Kaitie Goodson
Sadie was born April 7, 2020. Just after the very first COVID shut down. During that time my birthing center where my midwife is, was having to take off work. 7 days on, 7 days off. To make sure she was rested and prevent any chance of Covid. When I did the math, that was showing my midwife to not be available the week of my due date... my birth plan was to go as long as possible to go into labor naturally. So 2 weeks before Sadie was born I was walking 5 miles a day! Eating all the spicy foods, all the pineapple. All the sex... we were doing it all to try and induce her early on the week my midwife was on call! She didn’t come. So the week of Sadie’s due date I did NOTHING! I was a lump on the couch and kept that baby in! The following Monday (April 6) we had a game plan of check to see how far along I am if any, <1 induction 1-2> membrane sweep
Guess who was barely a 1! My midwife said okay we’ll see you tonight at 8! I am now 40weeks and 2 days heading in for induction.
Okay! So we go in Monday night, 8pm and they have to put a pill into my cervix to soften it up to 2cm so I could get Pitocin. That took like 8 hours.
Finally got to a 2 and Megan ,my midwife, wanted to start Pitocin and put the balloon in me to really get me going. That took another 5 hours. By around 12 I was in PAIN so they gave me a small does of pain meds and suggested a bath. Sweet Jesus that was amazing. An hour and a half later I was told they were upping my Pitocin so I needed to get out so I could get more pain meds. Good and bad decision. I was anxious, dizzy and Aaron said I wasn’t acting right he told me no more. At this point I was miserable with contractions every minute and I could still feel the contractions violently with the pain meds.
They keep coming to tug on the balloon to see if it was ready to come out and that would send me into an intense contraction that caused a panic attack and vomiting. Aaron hated that and was so worried. They finally got me up and walking. Took 2 laps around the floor and Megan came in to check my balloon. She pulled it right out. And was like okay this means my body is going to take a bit to catch up and when it does my contractions are going to get more intense. I was like epidural time??
So that was about 4pm. Got the epidural and they started flipping me around. On one side then the other then sitting up like a frog. But I was so happy I didn’t feel a thing! Got a popsicle! Then the pressure started. This was like 7:30. I felt intense pressure and I wanted to push. Megan checks me in at an 8 and little miss impatient is trying to push through my birth canal already but she face up so... cat/cow and pelvic tilts! So much fun! No seriously I did them for almost an hour I was so happy.
Then about 8:15 I felt the pressure again but it came and went with the contractions. They said when it starts to stay then it might be show time. About 40 mins later I was just ready to go I wanted to push. Megan checks me and I’m still not 100% effaced but Sadie has pushed through already so it was time to go!
The Calvary comes in and they break down the bed Manning all battle stations. Aaron’s got one leg, Bailey the nurse has another and Megan was ready. I start pushing and immediately can see her head. Then a nurse flies out of the room and comes back in yelling they need Megan a few doors down. A gals doc wasn’t there yet and the baby’s head was crowning... so they come in and tell me... mid push to stop pushing. I was like STOP PUSHING!? Then Megan comes back in like 2 seconds later and said let’s go.
A couple of pushes and I’m just screaming my head off. Megan looks at me and is like HEY you need to gain composure, calm down you can do this! Aaron just looks at me and says breathe. So I did, 4 pushes later and she’s out. Only pushed for 10 mins...April 7, 2020 9:03pm, 7lbs 9oz, 20.25 inches and she’s perfect, they slap her right on me, bloody and beautiful. I’m crying and she stopped immediately. She’s looking at me and we are now a family of 3.
